If you have a cat, your vet may have mentioned the FIV vaccine to you at some point. FIV is short for “Feline Immunodeficiency Virus”, which is a cat-specific virus spread by bite wounds from infected cats.
While not immediately life-threatening, FIV can suppress your cat’s immune system and therefore increase the likelihood and severity of other infections, potentially shortening your cat’s life. The vaccination for FIV is not 100% protective, though can potentially decrease the risk of contracting the disease.
